Home and away!

23 01 2008

Well, we didn’t get as many blog updates in as we wanted to … but then again, we didn’t get as much sight-seeing in as we wanted to either.

As luck would have it, the day after our fantastic brunch (yes, that would be Monday), mom woke up with a shooting pain down her leg — we think pressure on a nerve. Anyway, she was laid out until Wednesday night, when they left! :-(

On Monday night, Dad and I went across the street to a very nice restaurant for some Vietnamese food. It was lovely, and we brought mom back her requested tuna sandwich. All was good until Tuesday morning, when both pops & I came down with … you guessed, food poisoning. Dad & I were recovered enough by Wednesday, but just hung low with mom who still isn’t back on track.

Oh no! Oh yes. The ‘rents were here for 7 days, 3 of which were spent sight-seeing the inside of my apartment building.  They left yesterday night bound for the US — mom hoping to see a doctor soon. (Their insurance doesn’t cover them overseas unless there is “loss of life or limb!!!!!” .. seriously.)

So … think positive thoughts. I know when mom comes back online, she’ll have something lovely to say about their great time here.

Now, I’m looking forward to Conrad’s visit, early in February.

That’s all for now … still smiling in sunny Singapore!

He likes it, he likes it!

After asking dad if he was excited to see Singapore .. and getting a resounding, “no.” I’m delighted to report that he is having a grand ol time.

Better than that, the man who doesn’t like spicy food did some damage to some Chili Crab tonight. Maybe it’s because I fed him amazing mussels with all you can eat french fries at the famed Brussels Sprouts restaurant the night before. Or maybe it’s because we started the meal with a snack of “fried sweet baby squids” and “beansprouts with dried fish” — come on, doesn’t it sound yummy?

Well, surprisingly, it is.

AND .. really to top it all off, the ‘rents were challenged with a Christmas present of chopsticks and a coupon for a week where they may only use said chopsticks to dine with *before* coming to Singapore. They did it! And now they are pros with the chopsticks. I can take these kids anywhere. Dad was proud to say that on day 1, he attempted and won over WET NOODLES!

Ah, to know that such exciting firsts are still available to you in your 60′s … got to love that life is so varied and crazy that you can still have new experiences and surprises after all that time.

Tomorrow we’re off to see the famous Raffles hotel (and its Singapore slings) … here’s to hoping for nice weather!

They’re here! They’re here!

The parents arrived on a late-night, early-morning flight … today (yesterday? 2am last night? … eish!) Well… at any rate, we were home by 3a, so it was a late night /early morning… you know what I mean.

A few fun things to share already!

* Mom changed money and the lady told her how much it was, and mom thought she had to pay the woman more money. Nope. 500 = 700. Ah, the wonders of trading in cold, hard American moola for funny money … too bad you get a ton less than you used to.

* After sufficiently catching up with eachother in the taxi, mom decided to try out her Singlish. Yet despite craning her head to an extremely odd angle and leaning nearly into the headrest of the driver’s seat AND speaking to him loudly … she just couldn’t make it out. It’ll happen mom, don’t worry lah!

* They brought me an air mattress! That’s right, I wasn’t about to pay an extra $35/day for a cot and I didn’t want them to stay in a hotel, so Wal-Mart to the rescue. Only one problem … my laptop just plugs straight into the adapter into the wall. Who know you could get that kind of smell & sparkage from a little wal-mart pump. No fires, but man, that thing really flew with 250 volts going to it instead of the US’s 115! Good thing the socket in the bathroom can do either … only the pump sorta died out about half-way into the job.

AirMattress from Wal-Mart: $35

Flight to Singapore to share it with your daugher: $3500

Watching your daughter manually inflate an airmattress at 2:30 in the morning (yep, that means by mouth): Priceless

Ah, it’s a real family affair!

(If you’re lucky, mom will post some things to the blog herself this week. Get comfortable, this could get interesting!)
