Old guys tell the coolest stories

16 08 2008

Remember the opening scene of Saving Private Ryan? My godfather was among the boys who stormed the beaches of Normandy. Later he was wounded, sent to Germany, and awarded the purple heart. I have that medal. Over the years, i’ve been given other bits of treasure … and it’s the greatest gift a man could offer, and hope to share: his legacy.

Today my godfather, Mike Pizza (really), will celebrate his 90th birthday. I dedicate this blog post to him, and use it to share with you one of his treasures: a speech he gave a long, long time ago as he traveled to his Masonic brothers. Enjoy.

12 techies led away from basements and laptops to row boat painted like large dragon

4 08 2008

Much hilarity ensues.

Yes. This Saturday, Conrad and some of his colleagues boarded the corporate-sponsored dragon boat and pulled together to the beat of a Chinese drum strapped to the bow. Saturday was the Hong Kong Dragon Boat Festival — and it was celebrated in many cities around the world. In New York City, celebrations were centered in Flushing, Queens (or what our accented friends call “Frushing” .. eventually we worked it out).

The lake was right near the site of the 1964/65 World’s Fair — made famous recently in Will Smith’s “Men in Black” when the large alien tried to make a get-away from the flying saucers that loom over the decrepit fair grounds. We walked right by them.

The guys walked away with the bronze medal from their first race – nice. Unfortunately, Sunday’s race was forfeited when our stalwart techies were unable to diversify crew with the requisite number of female employees. Ah two ways to take that I’m afraid: 1. Our techies still need some help meeting girls, and 2. We still have some work to do to break through that digital divide .. let’s get cracking ladies, the boys need help in the dragon boats!

Only in NYC – Hermit crab lovers?

3 08 2008

I first saw it on the Web: “Welcome, New York Hermit Crab Lovers!”

What? .. I had to read more. And kindly, the kind poster obliges:

“I’m thinking of buying hermit crabs. I’d like to meet more hermit crab owners. We could go see each others’ hermit crabs. Go on field trips. See movies together. Trade crabs, shells.”

Bizarre? Yes. Sketchy. You bet. Humorous. I sure hope so!

Oh .. and if you’re a NY Hermit Crab lover who wants to bring your crabs to the beach in early September, read on.
