Trashy TV … a learning opportunity?

18 03 2008

Ok … not that I’m going to admit to recently watching The Real Housewives of NYC, but if my friend watched the show, and if she learned a new word, and it was a good one, would that be all wrong?

Word: “like, a total Polyglot

Context: Rich NYC housewife on why it’s important her NYC kids have a French nanny and learn to speak a second language. “… because they will be traveling around the world, and like, even their home country, is, like, a total polyglot.”

Me: I’m sorry, what!? Is that even a word? Oh, snap. It is. And it’s a good one. Wow.
Me <– I mean, my “friend” <– surprised and sheepish

Learnin new words…

17 03 2008

… every day. Always.

Today’s “a ha” occurred while reading our Annual Report. And after groaning about Sam P’s $20M salary … I found enjoyment in the words my communication peers had paired…

<snip>”Business: Impelled by this new global arena…”</snip>

“Impelled?” thought I. Pray, tell. I have heard “compelled,” surely. But to ‘im-pel.’ This is new. Upon further investigation, I discovered (thanks to dictionary.com):

impel means to urge or encourage while compel means to take action as a result of pressure or coercion; impel is very similar in meaning to compel but suggests even more strongly an inner drive to do something and often a greater urgency in the desire to act”

Like it.

Top of the mornin’ to you!

17 03 2008

Happy St Patrick’s day everyone! Instead of following temptation to play hookie and attend the NYC St Patty’s Day parade … I’m posting a few little know St Patty’s day facts and observations.

  1. The correct response to “Top o’ the mornin’ to you” is “… And the rest of the day to yourself.”
    ~
  2. Green was not the original color of Ireland or St Patty’s day … blue was.

    ~

  3. “St Patrick” was not Irish nor was he originally named “Patrick” nor did he “drive the snakes out of Ireland” … but he was a real guy. He was actually a British preacher — his name was changed to Father “Patrick” (Irish spelling is different) when he was ordained — who went to Ireland and converted the pagans to catholicism. Because the snake was a popular pagan symbol, most likely that is behind the metaphor … driving the pagans out of Ireland … supposedly, just 200 years after he arrived (and of course, died) Ireland was 100% catholic.

  4. I saw a MASSIVE end-to-end rainbow through the boss’ window in Somers on Thursday of last week — full color range, and a full arch sweeping up from one end of the valley, into the clouds, and down to the other side. So I know the Leprechauns have arrived for St Patty’s day … look out and try to catch one to find his gold!!

  5. NYC’s St Patrick’s Day parade is the oldest parade in our country, dating back to 1762 (before the signing of the declaration of independence). It runs from 11am to about 5pm; they expect about 150,000 people to MARCH in the parade and about 2 MILLION people to watch it. I don’t know how many hot dogs and pretzels are consumed today, but I bet those carts make a mint (green-pun intended)!

Nearing our biggest financial crisis in how long, and where is our President?

Mini has a new model … and it has all the features that are important to me … and the thing most important to Conrad. Thanks to Melissa for sharing the news … our new mini is on order (C’s hoping it comes with a year’s worth of weiners).

A godfather’s wisdom

14 03 2008

My godfather (who is also my mom’s uncle) e-mailed my mother the other day. It’s too good not to share:

I have to go cause you know youre getting old when …

  • you feel like the day after the night before … and you have not been anywhere
  • when it takes you longer to rest than to get tired
  • when you proposition a girl … and hopes she says no
  • when you are more interested in your banker than a real beautiful red head; and
  • when you know your way around but you dont feel like going

You know me, i’ve been all over the world and i saw plenty of action in france, in belguin, in amsteradam… i’ve been to every “dam” place did it all. Love you.

Man … what a statement. I hope to look back on life like that some day … if I’m lucky!
