What would you sing?

25 03 2008

Conrad and I are watching American Idol. He tells me he could pass on it without missing any sleep, but somehow once it’s on, he’s sucked in like the rest of us.

The challenge for the singers tonight? Sing a song from your birth year.

Made C & I think about what we would sing. Here’s how it came out:

Conrad – 1974: “Hooked on a Feeling,” by Blue Suede (I was lobbying for “Kung Fu Fighting” … and also interesting fact, John Denver hit it big with Annie’s Song in 1974 … a song that was sung at our wedding :-) )

Becky – 1978: It has to be “You’re The One That I Want” as Grease came out in 1978 and had more than one chart topper. It was either that or ” Three Times A Lady” by the Commodores or “You Don’t Bring Me Flowers” by Neil & Barbara. <Sigh> Good times.

So … what song would you sing from the year you were born?

Comments people … I want to see comments! :-)

Oh … and if you’re not sure, look up the singles hits from your birth year.

Is “sung” a word? Sounds right. Looks wrong. Got to be wrong, but too tired to think about it and look at words most days anyway. So there :-)

Yes, “sung” is a word (as in sing, sang, sung).
From 1938, my favorites would be “Whistle While You Work” (Seven Dwarfs); or
“You Must Have Been a Beautiful Baby” (cause look at me now! HA!)

Ahh, good ‘ole 1973. It’s a toss-up for me between Lynyrd Skynyrd – “Free Bird”, and Marvin Gaye – “Let’s Get It On”…

Holy crap, 1978 was prob the worst year ever for songs. Wow. After drilling down a bit on some of the charts, I’ll have to go with Runnin’ With The Devil from Van Halen. PS, if you want to laugh, take a listen to just the vocal track from that song.

ooo … “runnin’ with the devil” … classic. Hmm, should we read into that one? :-)

Ooh – get ready for some time travel. I’m torn, but from that golden year of 1963 (yes – I am THAT old), I think #1 slightly edges out backup choice #2:

First choice: “Be my baby” by the Ronettes – because I have ALWAYS loved the vocals on that one. Plus I’d get to do that “uhh, uhh, uhh, uhh…” and the hand motions and stuff… because I am simply THAT gay.

Backup: “It’s my party” by Lesley Gore. Simply because it is ALWAYS my party and I will cry if I want to – or smack you. Or deny you food. Whatever. You will pay.

Oh wait. sorry.

Interesting side note: 1963 was totally the year of the surf song with Surfin’ USA, Surfer Girl, Wipeout and Surf City.

So, 1980…year of the monkey…and a metal one at that.

Anyway, about the song. It would have to be Queen, “Crazy little thing called love” mainly because it’s fabulous, and also because as much as I love the song (Singapore’s anthem after all), I can’t see myself singing the fabulous intro to Pink Floyd, “Another brick in the wall”.

No more blackmailing me now!

oh god. Well to break the rules, I would sing Easy E’s gimme that nut. Moms, do NOT google that and listen.

but from the year 1977, let’s see what a good little ditty I could warble…
I do believe it would be You Make Lovin’ Fun – Fleetwood Mac. I could carry that tune, and to totally cheese out, Factor sure does make lovin’ fun.

1975 had some interesting song choices. If I was a true blue American Idol contestant I would have to “scream” out a Celine, Whitney, Mariah diddy and thankfully, 1975 has one in “All by Myself”. I am almost certain that has been massacred at least once or twice on the show already. (On a side note, can you believe they did a Mariah theme night — after all the years of telling them not to sing her songs?!?!?!) But personally, I love the song “If” by Bread … in fact, I am almost certain I have done that at least once at Karaoke and stone cold sober too … eeks! “If a picture paints a thousand words then why can’t I paint you?” Everyone say ahhhh …. hehehe
