Christmas shopping in Singapore

17 12 2007

What a great weekend was had. I have been reticent not to blog-as-I-go, but here’s the little update-in-brief.

Met my palindrome friend on Saturday for a day of sunbathing and shopping. We were so stoke we were both up before 9a on a weekend. Starbucks and suntans were on by 10. Though the sun wasn’t cooperating full-force, we did have a nice couple of warm hours by the pool before lunch. A nip into the steamroom & sauna finished out the morning nicely.

Funan DigitalLife MallWe wandered over to a mall called the Funan DigitalLife Mall (near City Hall) as the first stop. It is floor-on-floor-on-floor-on-floor of techy stories where the goods are priced as marked, vs. Sim Lim mall where it’s all “special price for you” and you better know just how “special” it can be. Hannah needed some things in there — sorry Conrad, I still don’t have the gumption for IT-shopping in Singapore.

After that, it was into some little boutiques for a wake-up call about high fashion we couldn’t fit a thigh into even if we could afford it. Then went over to Chimes — an old school — for a little light lunch. The layout of Chimes is very colonial – with a courtyard in the center and shops & cafes on the inside borders. Found some nice Asian shops in there too.

Then up to the Singapore Art Museum and Gift Shop — we even got a free tour of the Big Picture Show (larger than life canvases by Asian artists). We then waited for the monsoon to subside and made our way down to the luxurious Raffles hotel for a little more boutique-peeping, and a look at what is likely the largest natural pine Christmas tree in Singapore.

Speaking of decorated trees — there are a ton of them, but 90% or more of them are fake. But the ones at the Raffle are beautiful — we spoke to the manager. Turns out they flew in this 20′ pine tree from Oregon!!

Ok, back to the story! So … fully exhausted from a tough day of shopping, we retired back to Chimes for a little facial :-) Anyone who spends anytime in Singapore agrees — the heat & humidity is so tough that our skin is all … well, not very nice. So… first facial ever, some parts were painful, but most of it was quite lovely and relaxing.

Once back at my apartment, we ordered California Pizza Kitchen, spread out all the loot on the floor, and watched Kate Winslet and Jack Black somehow manage to fall in love :-)

Sunday was great as well. How random is it that neighbor’s from my parent’s village not only have plans to stay in Singapore for a day, but are staying in the Marriott hotel which is directly opposite my apartment. We met up in the afternoon & strolled through the Botanical Gardens and Singapore — a collage of orchids in virtually every size, shape, and color… absolutely beautiful (and crazy hot). From there, it was back to Raffles for a quintessential hot-weather-drink, the overpriced and much lauded Singapore sling. After our thirst was quenched, it was off to the taxi queue and then a scenic ride eastwards to East Coast Seafood center for a lasty meal of Drunken Prawns (live shrimps drowned/suffocated in alcohol … and then steamed with rice wine … talk about a way to go) and the famous Chili Crab. Sharon had actually found a write-up in another blog, so we followed the bloggers menu and also ordered the “bean sprouts with salted fish” — something I wouldn’t have tried on my own, but it tasted much better than it sounded (I’d actually order again). Seriously, sometimes I think these people need some marketing help (see previous post re: “egg skins” … aka “crepes”)!

All in all, a great weekend…

Oh, and only 4 days till I go home! :-) That’s probably the best part about the weekend.

Christmas cookies… and it’s not even an easy-bake oven! I love that my little engineer also made his own templates (note: the blobby ones are snowmen I hear). Let’s hear it for the boys!! (Even the ones in their 30′s)!

As my love-mentor Kelly would say, “I love this little guy.” And in the wise, wise words of my godfatha, “And how boy, and how!”

In case you didn’t know that about them, I highly recommend this company. It has humble roots, and hasn’t forgotten them. I won’t say what we purchased or for whom, but I called customer service about it yesterday and the experience was AWESOME. Any company with great customer service gets a gold-star and a recommendation in my book. Oh, and they don’t have just boots — got my dad Fly Fishing lessons from them one year, and we received a beautiful yule-log candle complete with the best smelling evergreens from a neighbor too — really high-quality, nice stuff. Shipping is good too. Ok, is that glowing enough?

L.L. Bean, add it to the bookmarks.

It’s snowing in NYC…

… I hope to lay out poolside tomorrow and work on my sunburn. Ah, there are some benefits to this gig ;-)

Yay sunshine!!

13 12 2007

So happy it’s sunning today. I hope it lasts through the weekend so I can arrive home tan enough to look like I’m living in a place where 80 degrees is a low.  It’s definitely a turn in the spirits of the week. The beginning of the week wasn’t so great, but today is definitely better.

Plus, I heard that scottandkristi got the call and are off to the birthing-room at the hospital. Prayers and good wishes you two as you expand your family yet again. Man, now another face to visit in Raleighwood!

In other news … 8 days to go till plane-time!!!! Did I mention I’m flying home business class on Singapore air! Man, we shall see if I have the guts to take photos or not, but from what I hear, this is living large and will make it hard to travel any other way. Consider a little Christmas present from big blue (the flight is 24 hrs and 8 minutes, so I’m figuring I’m worth it)!

The view outside my window is of the back of a mall. But the view on the *other* side of the mall is as glitterati as it can be. If you want to get an idea of what it’s like, I suggest checking out the “Photography by Nuna” blog for this week, great pics!

Updaters from rainy Singapore

Miss me? I’ve been quiet, but busy!

Friday night, I was able to catch a play I was wanting to see in New York City, but didn’t: Urinetown, the Musical. It’s a farce about … well, a “gotham-like city”, hmm, imagine where that could be :-) It was at an art university here, and Kelly, you would have run out of space on your memory card taking so many photos of the building!

Becky at the Bircham ballSaturday night was bigger — the British Consulate’s “Bircham Ball.” Though my prince charming was in a land far-far-away, there are always extras in the background to ooo and ahhh at the belle of the ball, who am I to decline the roll! :-) Much to Conrad’s holiday joy, and despite hours of our best shopping efforts, a new frock was not to be found. So I had to shake off the wrinkles and wear a “this old thing” … but it was a fun time all around. The men were all wearing Tuxedos (or what the British call “Dinner Jackets”) and the women looked great. The theme was “Disco” and the ball room in the Shangri-la hotel was a-glow in neon and sparklers — the live band played, we danced, we ate … what a way to ring out December in Singapore!

This week is back to work focus .. finishing the year strong. But this weekend, not sure what the odds are of this, my parent’s neighbors will be here in Singapore for the day on their way to Christmas in Thailand! I can already taste the chili crab.

A view from a new window

5 12 2007

IBM has a second office in Singapore — the 16th floor of a skyscraper closer to downtown (my commute is 15mins vs. the 60 to my normal office). The floor is a full mobile desks — only a handful of which have phones.

Not only did I pass a coffee cart on my way in, but there is a bar in the lobby (more on that later) and a great view from the heights … I feel a little closer to home from here :-)

However, the view from the windows is one only Singapore could provide. In front of me is a park in the center of which are 2 giant hectagonal mirror skyscrapers. Through the center of them and beyond the park is the passage to the ocean, and it is cluttered with ships. I didn’t know harbors could be cluttered with ships … but it’s the best I can do. I have counted 22 in easy range (with a few more blurry could-be’s on the horizon) — these are each well over a foot-ball field long — the kind that cross the ocean laden with tons of cargo of all kinds. I can also see to the right of the harbor a giant ferris wheel (like London’s “Eye”) — it’s due to open in January 2008 — each carriage holds about 20 people. Out another window is Arab Street — which is capped by two golden domes and great colorful spires.

Well, it’s a nice change from the view of the airport!

Made in China

5 12 2007

… I’ve started (thinking about) Christmas shopping, and for once in my life, I’m intently looking (& valuing) things with a “Made in China” label!! (Or Taiwan or Thailand or Vietnam or India… ) :-)

Fun times

2 12 2007

Dinner party was fun — simple Chicken dish with steamed veg. Wow — I have seen those cheapy steamers in the store, but dang. I never knew just how cool / useful / convenient they were. The hostess had a 3-decker … and used 1 level for potatoes, 1 level for broccoli, and 1 level for carrots … all came out so tender & full of good nutrients, so easy. They were telling me you can also do rice & crustless bread in the thing. I was impressed :-)

You know what else is impressive? Conrad just uploaded pictures from his Macy’s-Day-Parade-Eve walk around our neighborhood. The balloons are all inflated and ready for the big day tomorrow (a bit strange to look at them close-up and netted down, but still neat to imagine it). Next year, I *will* be there to experience it *with* Conrad, but this is a good step!
