Everything! Here are ten foodie things that have surprised me …
- Fried rules! So many of the foods are fried.
- Meats on sticks are popular street fare
- They eat rice for breakfast
- Ice cream can be served in bread (instead of a cone)
- They have ice cream flavors like Yam and Sesame Seed
- They put eggs on everything
- They called pulled meat “floss”
- One local fruit here is so stinky it’s not allowed in hotels or on airplanes. It’s called “Durian”
- They LOVE condensed milk — it’s in tea, in soup … hiding in any food to sweeten it up.
- Indian + Malaysian + Chinese = Singaporean food. Japanese is new-ish here, but pervasive. And Western food is well represented (though often simple things like salads are not often well done).

Oh Beck! Ice cream on bread???!!! I’m not certain I’d survive very well!!! After watching your slide show, I noted some staples that would keep me fortified: JIF peanut butter; Jello;B&M baked beans;Del Monte Corn; and PIZZA’s Baked Beans??? PIZZA’s beans???!!! Can’t be! The choices of fish (I think that’s weat they were) made my stomach churn a tad…looked to be a big worm like critter…I guess “Fried” woud make it great
…and how about the fish heads? Sure caught my eye! Mmmm! Perhaps eating out is a good way to go. ENJOY!!! Keep the pictures coming..xoxoxo Mom
Well, I’m up to date. Read your past blogs and looked at the slide show. Love all the colorful pics of the locals etc. Great pictures. Don’t know that I would be crazy about the food though, perhaps a bit risky for me. Looks like you are having some unique experiences, good for you.
Well, one of the most famous dishes here is called “Fish head curry.” I haven’t worked my culinary palate up to that yet, but I’m sure before I leave I’ll give it a go! Trying so hard to resist the american stuff and live in the culture … but McDonalds is looking better and better every day.
